| Frequently Asked Questions for the beginning skater... |
||||
| 1. What will I learn? The MPFSC uses the USFSA Skate with Us Program with 8 levels of progressive difficulty. After mastering these skills, you will be able to jump, spin, and do footwork by taking advanced classes of the Learn to Skate Program or by taking private instruction with a MPFSC instructor. 2. When do classes meet? Classes meed from Mid September thru May. They are usually held on Monday and Thursday nights from 6:00-6:50. Most skaters choose to skate only one night while others choose to skate both (for a reduced rate). It is your choice! We encourage that skaters in levels 3-8 skate at least 2 days/week. The more you practice the more progress you will make. 3. What is Practice Ice? Practice ice is the time available to the skaters to practice they skills they have been learning in class. It is held for 25 minutes during the time they are not getting their instruction. No lessons are taught during practice ice but additional help is sometimes available. We have been having most students participating in a structured class called Artistry in Motion during practice ice. 4. How Do I Registerr? You can register by obtaining a registration form from the Mt. Pleasant I.C.E. Arena, from the Mt. Pleasant FSC bulletin board, from the club website or by calling our information line at 989-779-0690. 5. Where can I get skates? You can rent skates from the ice arena for a small cost of $1. You can also purchase skates from local businesses such as Walmart, Dunhams, MC Sports, and Meijer. However, since skating is a seasonal sport, you may only be able to make this purchase between Oct. and Feb. The I.C.E. Arena also has a sports shop where you can purchase skates from. If you are renting skates from the I.C.E. Arena, please allow yourself enough time to make the purchase and put them on before classes begin. 6. How should skates fit? A well-fitted skate is essential for success and enjoyment on the ice. A snug fit is needed for ankle support. Tie the laces tight beginning from the toes up to the ankle of the skate. Wear a light-weight sock or skating tight for the best and most comfortable fit. 7. How do I lace my skates? Loosen the laces. Pull the tongue forward and insert your foot into the boot. Center the tongue and pull up on it. Then tighten the laces by pulling on them through the eyelets so they feel snug. Follow by criss crossing the laces snug around each hook. After you reach the top hook, tie a tight bow. If the ends of the laces are too long, tuck them into the top of the boot so they do not drag on the ice. A good fit will allow you to fit one finger in the back of the boot. 8. What should I wear? Our rink is located inside. Wear clothing that will keep you warm but that is not too bulky. Your clothing should allow you to move freely. Ex. sweatshirts, winter jackets, athletic pants, tights, skating dresses, turtlenecks, or snowpants. It is mandatory that skaters in Snow Plow Sam (ages 4-5) wear a helmet as well as any beginning skater in Level 1. 9. Should I take Private Lessons? Most skaters will be able to progress through the Basic Skills program and pass their levels without needing private lessons. However, private lessons will allow a skater to progress more quickly because they are receiving one-on-one attention from their instructor. Our professionals can teach private lessons on our club ice. This is an additional fee from our Learn to Skate Program. Private lesson fees are a culmination of an ice time fee as well as an instructors fee. For more information about private lessons, call: 989-779-0690 or email mtpleasantfsc@yahoo.com. |
