The Mt. Pleasant Figure Skating Club has many qualified and caring coaches on staff who will guide skaters as they make the transition from group lessons within the Learn to Skate USA program to private lessons as part of our Junior Club and MPFSC Programs.

Private lessons offer individualized instruction and skill development allowing for skaters to progress at their own rate. Skaters can also explore other avenues of figure skating including freestyle skating with programs to music and competition.

Coaches offering private lessons are independent contractors setting their own rate, payment plans and schedules.  To inquire on the availability of lessons, please use the contact information listed below to reach out to the coach of your choice.

Melanie Black

Skating Experience: Melanie is an active adult competitive freestyle skater and has coached since 2001. She is a twelve time National Champion at Adult Nationals and National Showcase as well as a three-time gold test medalist. Melanie coaches all levels, ages and abilities. She has coached Theater on Ice teams as well as finalists and champions at Adult nationals and Showcase Nationals.
Qualifications:  Melanie holds a Professional Skaters Association Registered Free Skate rating, Registered Group rating and a Senior Moves in the Field rating. She also has PSA certification in power skating for hockey, Hockey 1 and 2. Melanie has received a silver lifetime competitor award from USFS for attending 16 Adult National competitions and a PSA/USFS Get up Award. She holds a degree in broadcasting/marketing/music history and is an ACE certified personal trainer.

About: I am currently in my 3rd year of undergraduate school at Central Michigan University! I am getting a degree in Teaching Elementary Education (Grades PK-3). I work at PEAK all year and coach figure skating in Mount Pleasant and Big Rapids. Some things I like to do outside of coaching are going on walks, reading, going on adventures, and spending time with friends.

Eric Lapporte

Skating Experience: Eric Lapporte was a speed skater for 14 years, finishing his career at the Utah Olympic oval training center.  At retirement he was ranked around 30th overall nationwide, and 6th overall for first half lap time.  Now living in Michigan he studies to become an engineer.

 

 


Angela Cross

Skating Experience: I started skating at age 8 with a hockey helmet and knee pads. Figure skating has always been a safe space for me and something that challenged me to reach a larger potential than I ever could have imagined. I started coaching in October of 2023 and love it dearly! Coaching has even provided an outlet for me to dust off my skates (literally) and get back on the ice as an individual!

 


Michaela Kroll

Skating Experience/About: I’m an alum of the MPFSC who grew up skating there with my best friends and eventually competing, coaching, and judging all the way through my college years at Central Michigan University. Then after a few years teaching high school in Madison, WI, my husband and I returned to the area and had our two kids. My oldest is starting LTS with us this fall!

Owen Foust
 
Skating Experience/About: Coach Foust grew up in Central Michigan, where he developed a love for hockey, baseball, and football. He honed his hockey skills at the Rocky Mountain Hockey School and competed for the AA Hockey Club Midland Northstars. Throughout his youth career, he faced top-tier AAA teams from across the Midwest and made multiple appearances in the finals of the prestigious Silver Stick tournament. In high school, Coach Foust was a standout three-sport athlete, serving as captain for both the football and hockey teams while earning numerous conference honors. In the early stages of his coaching career, he has developed a strong passion for developing young athletes. He has served as an instructor at Central Michigan’s AHAMP clinic and actively supports various youth charities throughout West Michigan. Coach Foust works as a private lesson instructor, developing skills and training habits.
